Gustav Bauernfeind, 19th century German orientalist painter, was renowned for the impressive realism of his works. His paintings, which immerse spectators in the living scenes of the bazaars in Jerusalem, where he lived and is buried, captivate by their meticulousness. Specializing in urban landscapes, he paid great attention to the architectural details and clothing of his characters, often inspired by his own photographs. Although his works were widely admired during his lifetime, they fell into oblivion after his death. Today, he is considered one of the greatest German orientalist painters.
