Etymologically, the word Ketubah means "writing". This document first appeared on the return from the Babylonian exile. The Ketouba provides information on the date and place of the marriage ceremony, the names of the spouses and sometimes their parents, the husband's commitments to his wife, the amounts of the dowry and bride price - the most important clauses of the document - and the number and names of the various witnesses officially present at the ceremony.
